Nonna’s Mirror
My exploration of the mirror as metaphor and myths as roadmaps to personal rites of passage have opened up a portal of personal story telling. In 2022 I experimented with my Nonna’s mirror as a way to capture ancestral story. I am photographed looking into the mirror, I then replaced the image of myself reflected in the mirror with images of family and myself as a child.
The first series is taken in our family church. I am dressed in ceremonial white with an owl-wing headdress. The images reflected are my parents on their wedding day, and myself in my holy communion dress. Photographs by Michelle Robertson.
The second series is taken in our family church. I am dressed in my mother’s hand-sewn Tarantella costume that she wore in the 1970’s and 80’s during the Festa di Santa Roslia. Photographs by Michelle Robertson
